These benefits include…

  • Lower anxiety by activating the relaxation response and balancing the nervous system
  • Learn faster by enhancing the brain’s natural abilities to create new changes (also known as neuroplasticity)
  • Control stress by decreasing activity in the amygdala, the area of your brain responsible for fear
  • Boost concentration by adjusting brain waves to screen out unwanted thoughts and distractions
  • Increase creativity by addressing both the left and right sides of the brain
  • Improve overall mood by naturally increasing levels of the calming neurotransmitter GABA

So where does anxiety come from – and what’s the real reason I can’t stop it?

Anxiety originates in a very primitive part of our brain called the amygdala and to a lesser degree, the medial prefrontal cortex (or ME center). Both are major players in the psychology of anxiety. The amygdala acts as a primal fear response and the medial prefrontal cortex governs worry, indecisiveness, and rumination.

Let’s break each one down:

The job of the amygdala is to keep you alive, and in the prehistoric world, it did that just fine.

It worked like this: A threat appeared (let’s say a wild animal) and we immediately felt the fight or flight response. We either ran from it or fought and killed it. Either way, problem solved, and the fear response left us, along with the attendant stress hormones.

But for many of us in today’s world, the amygdala is firing on all cylinders with no way to turn it off.

Because in the modern world, the stressor triggering the fight or flight response isn’t something you can fight or run from. It’s a boss or a co-worker. The traffic during your morning commute. A family member. And since there’s no was to make it go away, it multiplies until even the smallest thing will trigger it.

By comparison, the cortex is the center of “worry” that we’re all so familiar with. During anxiety, the bodily sensations that you experience (tense shoulders, nausea, cold sweat) form very strong neural pathways. Just like a muscle, these neural pathways become stronger with use, eventually reaching the point where they become automatic.

In absolute layman’s terms, your amygdala produces fear, and your cortex takes that fear and runs wild with it.

The reason it seems like it just gets worse is because every time you experience an anxiety attack, you are literally strengthening the neural pathway that caused it in the first place. It feels like it’s getting worse because it is.

This sounds bad. How can I fix it?

Tools such as hypnotherapy, mindfulness and meditation weaken this neural connection. This means that over time we stop reacting as strongly to sensations that might have once lit up our the “worry” part of our brain. As this connection becomes weaker, we simultaneously grow the connection between the amygdala and the part of the brain known for reasoning.

So, when we experience scary or upsetting sensations, we can look at them in a rational way instead of through the lens of anxiety. Makes sense?

How to rewire your anxious brain in 12 minutes

Hypnotherapy (or ‘Hypnosis’) is just one of the many tools that we use at Helix Healthcare Group to ‘reset’ the way that the mind and body approaches stressful situations. Despite the way it is portrayed in movies and television, Hypnosis is simply a relaxed and focused state of awareness in which we access the subconscious mind to release traumas and reprogram behaviours. Hypnosis is not a state of sleep, but rather an altered state of consciousness. In fact, did you know that people enter into mild hypnosis about four times per hour without being aware of it?

It’s true. You enter a mild state of hypnosis when you watch television, when you exercise, when you play sports, and even when you drive a car.

The therapeutic hypnosis that we are going to teach you is much more powerful. It is a focused state of awareness and concentration that accesses the deepest layers of the mind to intentionally produce powerful psychological changes. It’s very similar to “The Zone” that you hear athletes talk about, except we place you in the zone on purpose with a specific goal in mind.

Can you imagine the difference this would make in your life?

Using this evidence-based hypnotherapy practice, you will begin to “rewire” the brain processes that lie at the root of your anxiety.

It’s time to regain balance in your mind-body connection so you feel like yourself again.
