Although total wellness has several important components, healing the mind is at the center of the recovery process. At Helix Healthcare Group, we offer an effective set of tools and a client-centered support system so that clients can not only recover, but are experiencing lasting transformations. Offered at our boutique treatment center, Helix Mind is a unique combination of Eastern practices with Western neuroscience. Whether for anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, or a substance abuse disorder, our mental health treatment in Toronto provides ground-breaking therapies and a level of spiritual support that evoke real results.
Through a marriage of the latest neuropsychology and integrative mindfulness, Helix Mind takes our clients on a journey of healing, heightened self-awareness, and personal rediscovery.
With our team of industry-leading professionals as their guides, clients acquire the skills necessary to reduce stress and anxiety; break through depression; overcome negative belief systems; communicate effectively; properly express grief, anger, and other intense emotions; cope with relationship challenges; address mood and personality disorders; and eliminate dependence on self-sabotaging coping mechanisms.
There are a number of psychotherapeutic modalities used in the treatment of mental health and substance abuse disorders, but Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is surely the most widely used. In practice, CBT is a straightforward, goal-oriented approach that frequently delivers strong results in a relatively short period of time. According to CBT, the driving force of human behavior is cognitions (i.e., emotions, attitudes, perceptions, thoughts). Therefore, modifying maladaptive behavior requires an individual to identify the cognitive root of that behavior and take steps to alter those cognitions. However, while CBT is an important tool for achieving mental health, we find that CBT is insufficient when used on its own, which brings us to the Helix Difference.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is just one of several different types of psychotherapy and neuropsychology that we use simultaneously in our mental health program. In addition to CBT, Helix Mind utilizes Psychodynamic Therapy, Somatic Psychotherapy, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, and several others. When it comes to mental wellness, it’s important to remember that everyone’s needs are different, which is why we have designed our program to be versatile and adaptable, able to accommodate even the most unique needs and preferences.
Described as an uncomfortable sensation of inner turmoil accompanies by feelings of nervousness, apprehension, fear, and dread, anxiety can range in intensity from mild to debilitating. When it’s severe, anxiety can trigger a variety of other mental and even physical health issues. Clients receiving our anxiety treatment participate in our integrative therapies where they learn how to overcome anxiety and its triggers. As well, Helix Mind teaches clients how to balance the nervous system and reduce psychological distress.
Mood disorders are a group of affective disturbances that include depression, bipolar disorder, and substance-induced disorders. One of the most significant dangers of mood disorders would be intense emotional dysregulation, which can lead to psychological upheaval and make it very difficult to function at work or even at home. With Helix Mind, we have created mood disorder treatment that helps clients achieve overall emotional balance.
A sense of fulfillment and purpose is integral to a person’s overall life satisfaction. It’s unfortunate that the time in which we find ourselves — with its emphasis on material wealth and celebrity — is not always conducive to psychological health and emotional prosperity. However, Helix Mind incorporates a host of wellness therapies and mindfulness techniques that are meant to nurture self-awareness while helping clients awaken their passions to cultivate a more inspired and gratifying life.
When a person exhibits a preoccupation with what he or she perceives as a defect in his or her physical appearance, the individual likely suffers from body dysmorphia. Someone with body dysmorphia frequently has negative thoughts about his or her looks, potentially leading to immense psychological distress and impair day-to-day functioning. For such individuals, Helix Mind can help to reprogram the mind to alleviate these unpleasant obsessive thoughts.
Although stress is not always a negative thing — in fact, stress played an integral role in our evolutionary history — but too much stress can have a catastrophic effect on a person’s mental and physical well-being. According to the latest studies in neuroscience, the brain can be rewired in a way that makes stress much easier to manage and mitigates many of its negative effects. Whether suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or some other stress-related condition, our clients benefit from the cutting-edge therapies we offer in addition to PTSD treatment and other offerings.
Regarding the relationship between trauma and substance abuse disorders, Dr. Gabor Maté said it best: “Not all addictions are rooted in abuse or trauma, but [they] can all be traced to painful experience. A hurt is at the centre of all [destructive] behaviours. It is present in the gambler, the internet addict, the compulsive shopper and the workaholic.” However, through trauma resolution, we can help clients uncover and address the underlying causes of addiction and their mental health issues.
By definition, personality disorders are the result of deeply-ingrained patterns of maladaptive behavior that lead to difficulties with impulse control, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships. These behavioral patterns often emerge during adolescence due to early-life experiences and produce a template with which a person organizes his or her interactions with the world. While these deeply-rooted behaviors are quite difficult to overcome on one’s own, our curriculum includes many of the top psychotherapies used to treat personality disorders today.
One of our most basic human needs is social interaction, which is what motivates relationships with family members, friends, romantic partners, colleagues, and so on. When functioning optimally, a person’s relationships confer emotional validation, personal fulfillment, and the reassurance of having a support system in place. Unfortunately, dysfunctional relationships can be quite damaging and cause intense emotional distress. Helix Mind can help individuals to identify the source of relationship dysfunction as well as the effects of that dysfunction. As well, we help clients develop strong interpersonal skills that allow them to pursue healthy, balanced relationships.
