If you’re an expecting mother, or even a brand new mother, there are many, many things you can do in your relationship with your in utero child or young child that will not only help prevent an addiction in the future, but also create a healthier, happy, more joyful experience of motherhood and childhood for your child.

Really, the number one thing is being aware of your own nervous system activation and regulation. The transmission level is extremely high in the first few years of life, and the more and more that we look at the development of the brain through neuroscience, we’re seeing that even things like not only addiction, but schizophrenia, bipolar, many different mental health disorders have neurological origins that go back to the first couple years of life. The number one things is if you’re a pregnant mom or a new mom, be conscious of yourself and really remember how much your energy is directly creating that child’s nervous system.
