Hi, my name is Angela and I’m a daughter of an alcoholic. Probably the first time that I started questioning my father’s addiction was when I was 12. I started to think about the amount of beer that he was drinking every night. I wanted to share this story because as a teenager growing up I felt alone and afraid. I always thought it affected just my family and no one else’s. That caused me to feel really sad and depressed growing up as a teenager. I am sharing my personal story today because I don’t want other people in the world to feel the same way that I felt growing up. Addiction is a common problem and there are a lot of high-functioning people, and families, with addiction challenges. It shouldn’t be a subject that is brushed under the rug. To end the stigma on mental health and addiction issues, we need to talk about it. Let’s keep the conversation going.
